Cooking out side in a fire pit can be challenging but it can also be very rewarding. You feel that you are really camping if you cook outside on a firepit. If you are planning do cook on an outside fire pit you must check with campsite or area that open fires are permitted. Once this is done then you can proceed. You must keep the fire going at all times. You will never get a meal prepared if you let the fire go out. Besides cooking on the coals is the fastest and easiest way to cook. It take a while to create a good bed of coals so be patient. You must have a grate in the fireplace for pots to be placed on. It is wise to put the grate in the fire pit before the fire is going. You will be ensured that the grate will be level and it will be a safer cooking experience. You must have a good pair of gloves for handling hot pots. Oven mitts do not work so well over an open fire. Go and purchase a good pair of fireproof gloves. Aluminum foil is an important tool for fire pit cooking. To expediate clean up of pots rub the outside bottom of the pots with dish detergent. Any soot will gather on the dish soap and clean up will be a breeze. Make sure you have a good supply of wood available of different sizes. Once cooking starts and you have a good bed of coals you will not have to add too much wood but you will need to add wood after you are finished to keep the fire going. |

When deciding to go camping it is important to choose the right stove. Things to consider are the size of your family, whether it is a standing camp or a moving camp, the size of the campsite. Some people just load their bbq in the trailer and do all their cooking on the bbq just like at home. Propane is the way to go. You can pick up the old Naptha gas stoves but these stoves are not a easy to cook on and they are not as safe as propane. When purchasing a stove buy a good one that will last. Take some time to do some research. Watch for end of season sales. |

Canoe Camp food planning is important because you have to have enough food to sustain the physical activity and light enough to carry self contained. There are lots of prepackaged food on the market that makes menu plannng easier however you can also do it yourself with a bit of imagination and it can be cheaper as well and sometimes better tasting. Avoid any canned or boxed foods as they will ad weight to your pack. Package all food in zip lock bags and if possible pack each meal together and label. It makes preparation time faster and easier. Pack in single size servings to avoid leftovers. If you think you are going to eat more pack an extra portion. Make sure to include snacks as well. |

Menu planning is an important part of camping prepartion. Involve all family members in this part of the planning. This is a good time to plan special "family camping meals" to make memories as well as meals. When you have prepared a menu you then prepare your shopping list. Keep a copy of the menu for all family members so that meal preparation can go as planned. It is nice to label food in the cooler with the day that each meal is to be prepared. It also allows family members to contribute to the process by knowing which food is for what day. So when you send people to the cooler to find things it is easier. It helps to be organized in the cooler. Most people bring more food to camp then the amount consumed. Most campers don't make allowance for leftovers. It is helpful to pack a empty cooler for extra ice, leftovers etc. |
