Canoe Camp Packing

The idea for packing for canoe camp is to be self contained.  You want to be able to carry your pack on your back,  your canoe on your shoulder and portage only once.  However if you are canoeing in a group or if you have children this is not always possible.  It is important to purchase a really good backpack.  Spend a lot of time choosing this item.  Go to an outdoors store and choose a backpack that is suitable to the type of camping you are doing.  Make sure that the backpack fits on your back correctly.  A good sports store will tell you everything you will need to achieve this.  Don't be afraid to spend some money on this item.

Insert a big garbage bag into your backpack.  You want to pack your clothes in a separate garbage bag.  Roll your clothes as small as possible.  Always pack socks in a zip lock bag.  Always put one pair of socks on the outside of your backpack for easy access.  Always pack your raingear close to the top of the pack for easy access.  Always pack your first aid kit close to the top of your pack or in a outside pocket.

Food should be packed in zip lock bags to keep it dry.  Avoid carrying any food in cans, boxes or extra packaging.  This will ad weight  to your backpack.  Dry food is best.  There are commercial type food or you can simply create your own.  It is easier than you think.

You may have to pack two or three times to find a way to fit everything in.  If you run out of space reevaluate the clothes you are bringing and the amount of food you will actually need  for the trip.
