Canoe Camp Packing PDF Print E-mail

The idea for packing for canoe camp is to be self contained.  You want to be able to carry your pack on your back,  your canoe on your shoulder and portage only once.  However if you are canoeing in a group or if you have children this is not always possible.  It is important to purchase a really good backpack.  Spend a lot of time choosing this item.  Go to an outdoors store and choose a backpack that is suitable to the type of camping you are doing.  Make sure that the backpack fits on your back correctly.  A good sports store will tell you everything you will need to achieve this.  Don't be afraid to spend some money on this item.

Insert a big garbage bag into your backpack.  You want to pack your clothes in a separate garbage bag.  Roll your clothes as small as possible.  Always pack socks in a zip lock bag.  Always put one pair of socks on the outside of your backpack for easy access.  Always pack your raingear close to the top of the pack for easy access.  Always pack your first aid kit close to the top of your pack or in a outside pocket.

Food should be packed in zip lock bags to keep it dry.  Avoid carrying any food in cans, boxes or extra packaging.  This will ad weight  to your backpack.  Dry food is best.  There are commercial type food or you can simply create your own.  It is easier than you think.

You may have to pack two or three times to find a way to fit everything in.  If you run out of space reevaluate the clothes you are bringing and the amount of food you will actually need  for the trip.

Canoe trip camping can be an exciting adventure but planning must be done effectively.  Planning for a canoe camping trip should start at least one year before the adventure begins.  If this is your first canoe camping trip it is recommended that you find a company who takes people on canoe adventures so that you can learn the basics of canoe camping.

Your first canoe camping trip should be a one day overnight canoe back type of trip.  Choose a route that is well travelled by many canoeist so that if problems arise you have a support group. Ask lots of questions from avid canoeist and in the process perhaps ask them if you could join them on one of their canoe trips.

Decide when you are going to embark on your canoe camp: Before you decide where you are going you have to decide what time of the year you are gonig to go canoing.  If you have a general idea where you would like to canoe it is wise to perhaps study some weather patterns for that area, accessible camping spots on the route, the number of portages, etc

Decide on a route: When you have decided on where you are going to canoe make sure that you will be able to find accessible camping spots along that route, how long you are going to canoe each day,  alternate camping spots along the route if you don't acheive your distance,

Buy a good topographical map: buy a good topographical map for each member that will be canoing.  Make sure that every person knows how to read a map.  Store the map in a zip lock bag to ensure that no water will ruin the map.

Set time aside for planning :The success of any canoe camp is effective planning.  Set time aside once a week, once a month and make sure that all members are committed to the planning of the trip.

Personal Hygiene PDF Print E-mail

Although the outdoors is fun and exciting it is still important to have personal cleanliness at camp.  There should be a washing station set up with a soap, water, and towel for clean ups before and after meals.    It is also handy to have quick disposable wipes for quick clean ups.  Check with each camp to find out disposable methods for water.  If you are really organized you can have a pot of hot water on the stove at all times for those touch dirty clean ups and clean up before retiring for the night.  Pack a complete hygeine package for each member of the family and put it in a zip lock bag. Items that might be included are:  washcloth, small towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, a few bandaids, liquid soap and label with names.

Rain Day Planning PDF Print E-mail

You should always have a plan for the rainy day at camp.  It can be a long day in a confined space.  It would be a good day to take a field trip to the local community.  You can also pack some rainy day events.  It is important to keep bedding and clothes dry.  If your vehicle is close by you may want to store all the clothes in the vehicle.  Make sure that you have your tent repair kit close at hand to handle any tent repairs that just show up when it starts to rain.  Food preparation can be a challenge when the weather is not so good.  It may be the night that the family eats out at a local restaurant and a movie after.
